What is the best way for organizations to use social media and why?

Social media is quite hype around the world in many enterprises across various industries. However the real challenge that lies ahead of businesses is to build up an effective social media approach around consumer based business strategies. What I mean is to turn the "likes" into "buys" or "loyalty". Everybody collects likes on Facebook or try to increase their followers on Twitter. But I wouldn't say many of them knows what to do with them.
Everybody knows that people around the world spend more and more time on social media. Of course the figure is changing for different countries, the average is about 6-7 hours per month. For instance Turkey is a stunning example of this topic. The total online population is the half of the overall population however the facebook penetration among online population is almost 90% with being the 6th in the world. But do companies really utilize this potential. I do not believe so. Because it is a quite sensitive topic I believe. It is very important to manage the social media approach. Because it is obvious that social media such as Facebook and Twitter is a "frenemy". You have to be very careful about the management of the topic. It is very easy to suffer from social media when it is managed in an unprofessional way.
A successful social media approach needs to embrace the every step customer engagement life-cycle from being aware of the brand through buying decision and after sales support to being a loyal customer at the end.
In summary I believe effective and sentient social media strategy is a key to get customers hooked on your services and create real value for your corporation.
